nikkikoala90 asked: Sandy, I want to see the King's Speech. I don't really need it, but you should give me a wonderfully detailed persuasion of why I should. And then tell me which film should win Best Picture, King's Speech or TSN and why! ;D

... if you want. I just love your opinions <3

Goodness, I actually uttered, “I’m not worthy!” (wow from this blog people are realizing that I speak out loud to my computer a lot whatever whatever). But thank you for your ridiculous sweetness and for enjoying my ramblings — honestly not a post goes by without me telling myself to stop talking immediately, lol.

BUT YES, THE KING’S SPEECH. That is a lot of pressure (!) but it helps that you’re planning on seeing it alreads, I guess. I have to be honest, I don’t feel comfortable making definitive statements about things that I’m not more than ostensibly familiar with and I only saw The King’s Speech once. I feel like no persuasion or rec from me could possibly do this movie any justice because really, everyone should go, run out and see it immediately so I’ll be brief and way less detailed than you probably want!

Why do I think you should see it?

  • First and foremost the collection of esteemed and talented actors. Honestly the triumvirate of Colin Firth, Helena Bonham Carter, and Geoffrey Rush is a combination that really cannot be matched. In talent, elegance, and chemistry together. I don’t know how to say this but everything just felt genuine, including the relationships formed. Very believable, very moving.
  • Speaking of being moved, wow. I really really didn’t expect to love the film or be touched or to cry or stan over it the way I did. I went in expecting to love it and to come out saying something like “awesome movie but, one step closer to thinking TSN should win the Oscar”. But Colin Firth just grips your heart and never lets go as King George VI. Just absolutely heartbreaking and ultimately uplifting. Like, my heart actually soared at certain points in the film.
  • The palpable chemistry and bromance of Bertie/Lionel and Geoffrey/Colin. SERIOUSLY. Is this the year of the bromance? I loved them, I loved them, I loved them in the film. And Colin says Geoffrey is his geisha girl!
  • The cinematography. I heard about all the awards the film should win but never about the directing and for the cinematography. It’s just completely stunning and meaningful. I loved the colors, the close ups, the off center shots…so much so that I’ve (in a nerd-like fashion) dabbled in researching the significance in film making with specific shots because it’s so beautiful and I doubt there isn’t a complete precision there.
  • The last reason is the answer to your question about what should win best picture! The fact that I came out of this film and am completely content with Colin winning All The Awards (being the stupidly huge Jesse stan that I am) and the fact that I’d only be happy if TSN lost, if they lost to The King’s Speech kind of speaks volumes, no? I went in with blinders and the film kind of took me by surprise, demanded my attention, and made me fall in love.

As for definitively what I think should win best picture? I have been thinking about it but can’t come up with an answer. Both films excelled in different areas and are absolutely remarkable. Right now I call it a draw, but as we near the Oscars I might have a more solid answer. But I would be ecstatic of either won. I guess that wasn’t so short after all?
